The painter and sculptor Josef Bachlechner was born on October 28, 1871 in Bruneck, South Tyrol. He inherited his artistic talent from his grandfather, the painter and official Anton Alois Bachlechner. He passed the first years as an apprentice in Gröden and attended for a year the technical college for the woodcarvers in Bozen. Great artists such as Defregger and Diechtl were inspirations for him and for 8 years he even worked as fellow with Diechtl. During this time, he also studied in Rome and in the following years Munich, in order to improve his art. After this, he moved to Hall in Tyrol. His favorite work was carving nativities.
